Movie Digest
The political action-thriller “G20” started filming in January 2024, before Kamala Harris was announced as the Democratic presidential contender. Yet, it’s hard to avoid viewing it as a critique of the most recent high-profile presidential contest. In “G20,” Viola Davis plays President Danielle Sutton, a politician and former Iraq war hero hoping to win the G20 summit and gain international recognition. When mercenaries under the command of Corporal Rutledge (Antony Starr) take over the event and try to kidnap Sutton and her family, her dreams are crushed.

The second such film this week is Patricia Riggen’s “G20,” which feels like a contemporary Harrison Ford film. James Hawes’ CIA thriller “The Amateur,” which stars Rami Malek, is similar to a melancholic version of Phillip Noyce’s Jack Ryan films. Although many will cite the “Has Fallen” franchise as the main source of inspiration for “G20,” it feels much more in line with “Air Force One.” “G20,” which performs far better than the snoozy theatrics of “The Amateur,” may cause some to wonder why a prestige actor like Davis would want to lead an action vehicle, but, similar to Denzel Washington’s “The Equalizer,” her attempt seems to be motivated by a genuine love for the genre rather than a cheesy cash grab.
